PACES Robert's Place Children's Emergency Shelter Thrives Thanks to Donors

“Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful committed citizens can change the world; indeed, it’s the only thing that ever has.”
These famous words, used countless times to illustrate the power of community and possibility, stand as true today as when Margaret Mead first said them.
And when it comes to the story of Robert’s Place Children’s Emergency Shelter, they ring true.
Built by the determination of committed citizens and generous donors, Robert’s Place provides emergency shelter, protection and comfort to hundreds of children in Wyandotte County; children who have been removed from their homes due to suspected abuse and neglect; kids who have run away from home, often due to fear; children who are experiencing a behavioral health crisis and need help.
Named in loving memory of Robert Zevenbergen, the opening of Robert’s Place in the summer of 2015 was a day of celebration and joy for our community. Children in crisis now had a safe, warm, home-like environment when they needed it the most.  Instead of waiting for a place to stay, being moved from home to home or traveling across Kansas for placement, Robert’s Place could welcome them in a spacious and child-friendly home, specifically designed just for them.
And Robert’s Place was only possible because a group of citizens believed it was possible.
But the story does not end there. Because of the ongoing generosity of community donors, the children staying at Robert’s Place have everything they need to comfort them during their stay. The same community that built Robert’s Place continues to take care of children when they cannot be at home.
Gifts of blankets, toys and games, new clothing, personal care items and books are received by our grateful staff and welcomed with smiles by the children who visit the shelter. Catholic Charities of Northeast Kansas graciously provides warm meals for the kids each day. And donors continue to keep the dream of Robert’s Place alive with their generous gifts.
Today, we send a heartfelt thank you to the incredible community donors who fill their carts with coloring books, art supplies and journals; the ones who drop off warm blankets and new clothes; the ones who pick up extra toothbrushes, combs and shampoo; the ones who continue to go above and beyond for our kids at Robert’s Place with their thoughtful gifts.
You ARE that group of citizens changing the world for children at Robert’s Place.
Thank you.
